Scope/Description:

This guide will walk you through the steps to enable shadow copy on an SMB share running on ubuntu 20.04

root@ubuntu-45d:~# vim /etc/samba/smb.conf

shadow: snapdir = .zfs/snapshot

shadow: sort = desc

shadow: format = %Y-%m-%d-%H%M%S

Scope/Description:

This guide will walk you through the steps to enable shadow copy on an SMB share running on ubuntu 20.04

Prerequisites:

  • Ubuntu Server running Houston with znapzend

Steps:

  • Configure auto snapshot with znapzend, follow the guide below:

KB450410 – Automated ZFS Snapshots and Replication

  • Edit the smb.conf file adding the following under global, this must match what you setup in the previous step:

root@ubuntu-45d:~# vim /etc/samba/smb.conf

shadow: snapdir = .zfs/snapshot

shadow: sort = desc

shadow: format = %Y-%m-%d-%H%M%S
  • Add “vfs objects = shadow-copy2” to your smb configuration for your share in the Houston and restart Samba

 

Verification:

  • Connect to your share and try to view the snapshots under “Previous Versions” under the properties

Troubleshooting:

  • Verify there are snapshots being made.
